Commercial bin sizes guide: 240L, 360L, 660L and 1100L

How the four commercial wheelie bin sizes compare, and how to choose the right one for your business in South Wales.

Commercial bin sizes at a glance

Every size is measured in litres. The comparison column simply shows how much more each bin holds than the smallest one.

Bin sizeHolds compared with 240LUsually suits
240L1x (the baseline)Small sites with light, regular waste
360L1.5xSmall to medium sites
660LAbout 2.75xBusier sites with steady daily waste
1100LAbout 4.6xHigh volumes, bulky materials, large sites

Exact bin dimensions differ slightly between manufacturers. If you are short on space, ask us for the measurements before you decide.

How to choose the right bin size

1. How much you produce

Look at how full your current bins or boxes are at the end of a week. If they overflow, step up a size. If they are mostly empty, step down.

2. Space and access

Measure the spot where the bin will stand, and check gates, doors and slopes on the way. A bigger bin is no use if it cannot be moved in and out.

3. The type of material

Bulky materials such as cardboard take up more room than their weight suggests. Flattening boxes saves space in any bin.

4. How many bins you need

Workplaces in Wales have to keep key recyclables separate, so you may need more than one bin rather than one big one. See the law section below.

Where most businesses start

A rule of thumb only. We confirm the right size with you before anything is arranged.

Lighter volumes

Hairdressers, barbers, florists and small shops often begin with a 240L or 360L bin.

Busy daily trade

Restaurants, takeaways and busier shops often need a 660L bin, or a couple of smaller ones.

High volumes

Warehouses and cash and carry sites often use 1100L bins, sometimes several.

Every business is different, so call us with a rough idea of what you produce and we will suggest a size.

Bin sizes and the Wales recycling law

Since 6 April 2024, workplaces in Wales have had to separate key recyclable materials for collection. The Welsh Government's list covers food waste, paper and card, glass, metal, plastic and cartons, unsold textiles and unsold small electrical items.

In practice that often means a separate bin for each stream rather than one large mixed bin, so work out the size for each material, not for your waste as a whole. Read the official Welsh Government guidance.

When we collect, we provide waste transfer notes for your records. Find out what a waste transfer note is.

Bin size questions

Which bin sizes do you offer?

We offer 240L, 360L, 660L and 1100L commercial bins.

What is the biggest bin I can have?

The largest wheelie bin we offer is the 1100L. For very large volumes we also offer skips of all sizes, which you can see on our main Euro Recycle Cardiff website.

Can I put different materials in one bin?

Welsh law requires workplaces to keep key recyclables separate, so cardboard, plastic and metal should not simply be mixed together with other waste. Call us and we will explain how to set up your bins.

What if I choose the wrong size?

Tell us if a bin is regularly overflowing or mostly empty and we will talk through whether a different size would suit you better.

How much does a bin cost?

It depends on the bin size, the material and your location, so we give you a quote once you tell us what your business produces. Call or WhatsApp to get one.

Not sure which size? Ask us

Tell us what your business produces and we will suggest a bin size and send you a quote.
